Post Workout Recovery: Elevate your legs

Compression boots are all the rage for recovery right now, but there are other methods that are easy to access and free.

Whether it is a long day at Disneyland, a long run or a grueling workout, one of the keys to recovery is returning fluid from the feet and legs back into circulation.

Our heart does a great job of pushing fluid out to our body, but the return system relies on motion and gravity. Gravity pulls the fluid down into your feet and it can become a little stagnant like a swamp, slow to get nutrients in, and slow to get waste products out. By lying down and setting your feet up on the wall, gravity helps the fluid exit your feet and legs and return to your trunk where it is recycled or sent for removal, (the bladder).

Lying down in this position also provides a nice stretch on the hamstrings and lower back. Incorporate some box breathing/diaphragmatic breathing along with it and relax. It’s good for the mind and the breathing aids in pumping the lymphatic system to remove that swelling.

So after a long day or a long workout, lie down for 5-10 minutes, prop your feet up on the wall and enjoy the free recovery.
